Search Engine Optimization(SEO):
Search Engine Optimization is the process of getting/increasing organic traffic/visitors on any website.Organic traffic means the visitors which your website gets through any unpaid source or social media.
For simplifying this, let us look at an example:

I searched "samsung galaxy s10" in Google Chrome and Chrome showed about 29,60,00,000 results but in the right corner, we can see that there is a sponsored column so it tells us that it is paid promotion of this product.
Here is an example of organic search:

I searched youtube and we can see that there is no sponsored or promoted ad. So this organic search traffic.
Why SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is done to youtube.com to appear or rank in the first position when searched. Any search engine you are using has crawlers that go to every website and gather information. This information is passed through an algorithm that tries to match data related to the topic that you searched for.
There are many factors that are responsible for deciding the position of any URL in a particular search.
It is not that easy to do it.

SEO is itself a very huge topic to learn. Here is a short overview for understanding it.
Types of SEO:
- On-Page SEO: It includes the factors that you can control while putting content on your site.
- Off-Page SEO: It includes the actions that you perform outside of your own website to increase the ranking of your website.
On-Page SEO:
Also known as "on-site SEO". It is the process of optimizing webpages under a website in order to rank higher to get more organic traffic. Both the content and coding of the website are responsible for the On-Page SEO score of any website.
- Content: The first and most important factor is your content, how you write it, it's quality and quantity. Good length of your content is very important for ranking higher.
- Page Title: The title of your page should contain the keyword or topic on which you want to rank your website when it is searched on the internet.
- URL: Just like the title, the URL of your website should also contain the keyword you are working for.
- Alt Text: Same with alt text, it should also contain the same keyword.
Off-Page SEO:
To do this we need to go off-page. It includes increasing the trustworthiness, authority, and popularity of a website. As we learned that crawlers decide the rank/position of the website. Suppose there are two websites A and B, website A gives a do-follow backlink to website B. Whenever any crawler will visit website A will also see this do-follow backlink to website B and will consider website B a good website and authority of website B will get increased.
Building backlinks is considered as the heart of off-page SEO. If you create quality backlinks for domain of your website it will increase Domain Authority(DA) of your website. Similarly, if you create quality backlinks for a particular URL or page under your site it will increase Page Authority(PA) of that page. Websites with high DA & PA rank easily. But only do-follow backlinks do this.
There are many ways of creating backlinks to your site.
- Natural links are editorially given without any action on the part of a page owner. For example, a food blogger adding a link to a post that points toward their favorite produce farms is a natural link.
- Manually built links are acquired through deliberate link-building activities. This includes things like getting customers to link to your website or asking influencers to share your content.
- Self-created links are created by practices such as adding a backlink in an online directory, forum, blog comment signature, or a press release with optimized anchor text. Some self-created link building tactics tend toward black hat SEO and are frowned upon by search engines, so tread lightly here.
